Sierra Vista, Arizona is a growing city in southeastern Arizona. Surrounded by the Mule, Dragoon, Whetstone, and Huahaca mountains, Sierra Vista offers breathtaking natural beauty and a multitude of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Located approximately 70 miles southeast of Tucson, Sierra Vista (Spanish for "Mountain View") is a thriving community of approximately 43,000 people that serves as the regional economic and cultural center for southeastern Arizona.
Sierra Vista began life with the establishment of Fort Huachuca in 1877. As a camp, and later a fort, the post was the home base of the famed "Buffalo Soldiers" of the 9th and 10th Cavalry. The missions of the post at that time were to secure the southern borders of the expanding United States and to protect settlers from Indian attack. Several major commands now operate on Fort Huachuca, including the U.S. Army Network Enterprise Technology Command/9th Army Signal Command, the Army Intelligence Center and School, and the Electronic Proving Grounds.
Initially, the areas around Fort Huachuca were virtually unpopulated except for a few small ranches spread along the San Pedro River and close to the mountains. A small community gradually began to grow east of the fort. In 1956, this community was incorporated as Sierra Vista. Fort Huachuca was annexed by the city in 1971.
Since its incorporation, Sierra Vista has steadily grown to encompass more than 130 square miles. Residents and visitors alike enjoy numerous parks, two championship golf courses, public and private tennis courts and a vast network of trails and wildlife preserves. A bustling modern city at the heart of the southwest, Sierra Vista remains a wonderful place to live, work and explore.

Climate
Due to its great size and variations in elevation, the state of Arizona has greatly varying climate conditions from one area to another. Population:
One of the fastest-growing states in the nation, Arizona has a population of over 6.1 million, an increase of more than 1 million since the year 2000. The state's population is largely concentrated in the metropolitan areas of Phoenix and Tucson, the state's two largest cities. While there are smaller population centers around Yuma (in the southwest corner) and Flagstaff (in north-central Arizona), vast areas of the state remain largely uninhabited, due in great part to the desert climate.
